Been waiting for this! Writing like this gives me hope for a future untethered from the internet (and beautifully depicted, too)

briffin glue's avatar

Klaus Zynski's avatar

Yeah I'm in the same boat, less successfully lmao

briffin glue's avatar

You donot have to be right about the new pollution you are fingers pointing at the moon and the moon is us become cryptid batmen on the moon. What kind of a telephone does a poorboy have to practise hygiene to feel better than ill? Well phones are sick making, because one can tear holes in the other person's world view, confidence, but cannot patch them in a phone conversation. I hold out hope that a brick and mortar kiosk of like Aliens Giger design, in the house, tethering the phone might solve most problems in a fell swoop, but on the face it this clearly is today's rationalization. Like, if I continue to pick fights with strangers because they are not as receptive as Softstoppages, Smurfysheets, StopThat, standoffish people Who I value for their hard attitudinizing, unless I been online and then am too reactive to live and let die. It is immiseration as you say.

yeah you’re picking up exactly what i’m putting down. it’s a lot of BackAndForths punctuated by attempts at mimetic defense. an immiseration (or would “immersiration” be better?). also love the way you put words together—how do you write like that? it’s a beautiful flow

I believe I am using newspaper equitone. That was the voice I used when I wrote uber short novels, likely it is tv news talking head. The generous view is maybe the ground there is as fertile for apologies and corrections as philisophy with its jargon. It is mansplaining that hates itself, wishing I was telling a scifi story of confused identities. Contrast with Marsh Mcluhan in his textbook lecture style saying a thing like "welcome the mosaic style of tv!" what might conceivably be true; But as usual he then promised "You will form tribes, and they will massage you" which if we did talk mainly through four color avatars would vacate the meanings of words.

This text surprised me a lot

1. When I first started reading the text and saw that the it is broken down into parts that are accompanied by drawings

3. When the meaning clicked for me

2. When I wanted to listen to it after reading and pressed play

This is super creative and I admire the work put into it!

briffin glue's avatar

i appreciate that! thanks for reading/listening

Not gonna lie, I clicked on this thinking "sigh, yet another 'goodbye screens' post" and then it went in every direction possible. "wow" is what I said when I finished it. So many phrases and arguments resonated within me. Thank you :)

briffin glue's avatar

yeah there’s a lot of that kind of stuff on here (clicks, i guess) but imo a lot of “phone bad” content sucks not because it’s wrong but because it doesn’t go deep enough

love this format!

So that's where you've been! Welcome back!

briffin glue's avatar

thanks yeah it’s nice to be back

Didn't know how you'd make the combat but this feels like the only way it'd make sense. Can't wait to reread, perhaps on the train

briffin glue's avatar

mainly took a break to tinker with the format and work on some other stuff. v happy with how it turned out aesthetically but i have a feeling the algo will hate it. thanks for reading tho, even after the break

Loved this article. How can I share it to a non-substack person?

briffin glue's avatar

you can just copy the link and send it over text or email—i’m sure it’ll work with most browsers

When I send the link by email, the recipient still has to create a substack account in order to see it. Is your article anywhere else besides substack?
